Abstract:

Six maize (Zea mays) varieties with different resistance to maize rough dwarf virus (MRDV) were used to study the effects of MRDV on chlorophyll content, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and soluble protein content in leaf. The results showed that three physiological characteristics decreased significantly after the plants were infected by MRDV. The decline of chlorophyll contents and SOD activities appeared susceptible varieties>moderate resistant varieties>resistant varieties, and the decline of soluble protein contents appeared resistant varieties>moderate resistant varieties>susceptible varieties (except ‘QN105’). Correlation analysis indicated that the decline of chlorophyll contents and SOD activities were positively correlated with the disease index. The decline of soluble protein contents in five maize varieties except ‘QN105’ were negatively correlated with disease index. Therefore, the resistance to MRDV was related to the decline range of every physiological characteristic. The stronger resistance, the less decline of chlorophyll content and SOD activity, the greater decline of soluble protein content.
